Identify & Rank Targeted Employers

Dear Alice,

The last two newsletters discussed ways to expand your job target, now it is time to focus in on potential Employers.  This newsletter will discuss how to Organize & Rank a list of prospective employers, the importance and definition of a Value Statement, and How to Approach Your Targeted Employers. Once the foundation and research has been accomplished, you will be able to contact your targeted employers with self-assurance and confidence.

Organize and Rank Your List

In order to effectively organize and rank your potential employers, you must first know where to find them! There are many different ways to identify Employers; from news and company events in newspapers, to websites such as local chambers, Forbes, Hoovers, and business/Yellow pages. A lot of research is needed to develop a productive list, but it will be worth the time and energy. You should now have a clear vision on the types of jobs and titles that you want to pursue based on the Expanded Job Targets worksheet from the previous newsletter.

It is suggested that your list of potential employers consist of at least 200 companies. A target list of 200 positions in a healthy market results in 7 interviews that result in one job offer. Since we all know that we currently are NOT in a healthy market, one must go above and beyond this number in order to obtain results.

The Value Statement
Give Substance to Your Power Message

We all know the importance of your power message (aka elevator speech), but are you prepared to keep a potential employer interested in what you have to offer? Do you have examples of skills, talents and abilities prepared for discussion? Will an employer clearly understand the value that you will bring to their business? Rafi Mohammed,Ph.D., author of The 1% Windfall, shares some insight into the importance of creating a Value Statement for yourself.

What is a Value Statement and how does it apply to a job search or employment?

Rafi: A value statement goes one step further than a power message. This is where you will pitch yourself by reiterating your skills and attributes. I identify six main characteristics that employers desire, and this is where you need to clarify your traits: Speaking, Writing, Customer Service, Innovation/Motivation, Collegiality and Excellence.  If you know what a potential employer is looking for, then be prepared with examples of the small things/ situations/ instances which illustrate these key categories. Be specific in listing reasons… this is not a time to be modest.

How to Approach Your Targeted Employers

Now that you have your list of 200+ companies and have determined your Value Statement, you need to get creative in contacting these potential employers. There are 4 promising ways to reach out to different companies, and what may work well for one company may not necessarily work for another.

1) Cold Call the Company – Even though there are many avenues of job hunting for job seekers to follow, cold calling is a proven method of finding unpublished job leads, and ultimately landing the ideal job. Some suggestions for a successful cold call are to gather names of the people who have the power to offer you a job and make sure that you have a compelling Power Message/60 second commercial prepared. Once you make the call, be prepared to achieve one of these three goals…
- I will arrange a time for a meeting
- I will arrange a convenient time to talk further on the phone
- I will ask for a lead on a promising job opening elsewhere

2) Direct Target Letter – Also known as the Prospecting Letter may include the name of a referral and should be sent snail mail (as should your news event and direct referral letters). This letter should include your Power Message and your statement of interest. You should ask for the opportunity to discuss the company's plans, as well as the chance to explore how your experience and ...
