Crestview Responds to COVID-19 Concerns

Don’t Worry, Pray about Everything, Be Wise

[March 12, 2020]

These are words Pastor Shawn Barkley spoke to staff on Wednesday, March 11.  These paragraphs will help guide you through these three imperatives, listing scriptures you can read which address worry, scriptures you can pray, and wisdom from God’s Word and from good health practice.

Don’t Worry!

With the current world-wide health concerns it is easy for us to feel isolated, worried, anxious or afraid.  Anxiety and panic stem from a spirit of fear.  2 TIMOTHY 1:7 tell us:  For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love and sound mind.  There are those who whisper lies to us to get us to give in to worship fear, and anxiety.  We must keep our eyes on God and remember he is provider, sustainer, healer, deliverer, refuge.

You will receive power and strength in reading scripture.  In Isaiah 55:11 God promises:  “so is my word that goes out from my mouth—it will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.

 Pray About Everything!

Praying God’s word back to Him reminds Him that there are still things we are depending on Him for, and He promised that His word, even spoken by us, will yield results. You may wish to read these scriptures out loud because His Word says that “faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

Read through this list, and then pick one or two which address your particular need and meditate on them.  Repeat several times a day, asking the Spirit to guide you to the verse you need!

  • Philippians 4:6-7

“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.”

  • Matthew 6:34

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

  • Proverbs 3:5-6

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

  • Deuteronomy 31:6

“Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.”

  • Matthew 6:25

“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?”

  • John 14:1

“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.”

  • John 14:27

“I am leaving you with a gift–peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.”

  • Isaiah 35:4

  • 1 Peter 5:6-9

“But whoever listens to me will dwell secure and will be at ease, without dread of disaster.”

Be Wise:

The best way to protect yourself from the virus is to avoid exposure to it by using the normal health precautions you would take to avoid illnesses such as the flu or the common cold.

  • If you are sick, stay home.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Wash your hands often and properly (soap and water, for at least 20 seconds).
  • If soap and water are not available, use a hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces or objects.
  • If you must sneeze or cough and have no tissue available, do so in the inside of your elbow, not into your hands or into the air.

Hopefully this information will help you feel more informed and comfortable as you make decisions for yourself and your family.
