I Samuel 16
Today, Samuel anoints David as king. David was:
- Son of Jesse
- Skillful in playing music
- A mighty man of valor
- A man of war
- Prudent in speech
- Handsome
- The Lord was with him
Another summary statement was Samuel’s report of the Lord’s assessment: he was “a man after [God’s] own heart ( I Sam 13:14). This was a stark contrast to Saul, David’s predecessor who repeatedly departed from God’s ways. David was by no means a perfect man. But despite his flaws, he kept turning toward the Lord for guidance, help, and forgiveness. He was God’s choice to solidly establish a monarchy to last forever (2 Sam 7:12-16).
