
Heard the Good News?

In today’s day and age who wouldn’t want to hear some Good News? Traditionally, the word that the Church uses to describe the life of Jesus is the Gospel–or literally the “Good News.” Evidently, it really must have been pretty good news because it swept through the world. From all accounts, it was a massively encouraging and inclusive message that spread from a group of religious zealots in the backwaters of the Roman Empire into the urban centers–gathering people from multiple ethnic groups and drawing in people from all sorts of belief systems–bridging the class wars and bringing both the wealthy and the poor to commune around a common table. It must have really been some “Good News.” But what was this news, and why might anyone be interested in hearing it today?
